Meet our NEW artists!

We recently launched TWO NEW RANGES by two very different and not-so-equally talented artists. We sit down with both of them to find out what makes them tick.
Name: Jack Carty

Occupation By Day: Musician / Co-owner of The Cardy Club

Occupation By Night: Musician / Sleepy boy.

How did your new range with The Cardy Club come about?: The brains and talent behind The Cardy Club is my wonderful wife Tashi - she’s the one responsible for all the beautiful designs and illustrations. I’ve been helping out with the running of things from the beginning, and somewhere along the line we started joking about how funny it would be if I were to do a little “Jack Range”. It was basically a joke that turned into a reality.
How would you describe your range?: Heartfelt, poorly illustrated and a little-bit shit.

What was the inspiration behind the range?: Tashi telling me I had to do it...

What is your artistic process?: Sitting around in my pants watching The Americans and doodling on an iPad Pro. And also Party Hats.

What’s been your favourite thing about making your cards?: I think my favourite thing is that I actually really like them. They’re kinda cute.

Your biggest artistic influencers?: This is a hard one… People tell me that my work reminds them of a young Pablo Picasso. REALLY young. Like, from when he was 2.

If you weren’t a musician/card designer, what would you be?: I honestly don’t know. I never wanted to be anything other than a songwriter from when I was about 10 years old, and running The Cardy Club with Tashi has been such an incredible adventure already! I’ve learned HEAPS and it’s so exciting to get to create and grow this thing we started together. I wouldn’t change it.

If 13 year old Jack Carty walked up to you on the street and asked you for some life advice, but you only had 10 seconds to answer, what would you say?: Be kind, look outwards, and make the art you want to make.
Would you rather have feet for hands or hands for feet?: This isn’t even hard. I would MUCH rather have hands for feet. That could be an advantage in SO MANY SITUATIONS! You would be the best climber ever!

Where can find out more about Jack Carty?: My music website: www.jackcarty.com  and my instagram @jackcarty
Next up, we have the incredibly talented Kaili Saba.....

Name: Kaili Saba
Occupation By Day: Office Manager and full-time mum to 3 kids - Archer aged 4, Lily aged 10, Zak aged 13
Occupation By Night: Artist and illustrator at Kaili Saba
How did your new range with The Cardy Club come about?
I have a rad sister who hooked me up with the right contacts ;) But seriously my very talented and generous sister Natasha convinced me to develop a range for her card company The Cards Club. I was keen but also unsure that I had the time to take on the project. But she finally convinced me it would be great, and I'm glad I did it! I feel like I've learned a lot and developed my style further since then, so I hope to design more cards for The Cardy Club in the future.
How would you describe your range?
Feminine, colourful, sweet, whimsical.
What was the inspiration behind the range?
The inspiration behind this range was inspired by the daydreamy, fun and whimsical world that exists in my head - think pastel colours, fashion, girls, coffee and cocktails :)
What is your artistic process?
I put on my headphones and listen to a podcast or music, have a glass of wine and either start sketching or looking up images to find some inspiration. It might come from a fashion show, the red carpet, a photograph or a pretty colour palette I see. From there I will start playing around with the different ideas floating around, and start sketching until I find an idea that sticks and feels right. I work both traditionally with markers and paints, or digitally with my iPad and Procreate, and depending on what I feel like, where I am or how much time I have, I will start illustrating from there. Depending on the project, I might take anywhere from a few hours to a few days to complete an illustration or design.
What’s been your favourite thing about making your cards?
Seeing my illustrations come to life and printed on cards that people enjoy and want to buy for themselves or loved ones is an awesome and rewarding thought.
Who/what are your biggest artistic influencers?
I am usually inspired by fashion, colour, trends, and other artists. My favourite artists have a distinctive and yet childlike style.

Walk me through a day in the life of Kaili Saba?
I try to wake up before the kids and get myself ready while having a coffee. Then I wake up the kids and help them to get ready for school. After I drop all the kids to school, I will usually head to the gym for a workout. My husband I own and run a commercial plumbing and fire company, so I will usually spend some time doing administrative work for that, when I am home from the gym. If Archer is home with me, we will also go to the park or shops, play at home with Lego or Play Doh and take our dog Coco for a walk. If Archer is at Kindy, I work more and depending on what's on, I also try to set aside some time to do some creative or admin work for Kaili Saba, such as making new art, answering emails and posting orders. At 3 pm it's time to pick up the kids from school, and we head home to change and get ready for their various after school activities like taekwondo, and cheerleading. Then it's time to head home again for the kids to do homework and have showers while I make dinner. We all pitch in to help cleanup after dinner, then its time for reading and bedtime for the kids. Once the kids have gone to sleep, I might do more office work, or continue doing art for Kaili Saba or watch a TV show with my husband to wind down. I am usually a (very late) night owl, but lately I'm trying to be in bed by 10.20-11pm.
If you weren’t a Business Owner/Illustrator/card designer, what would you be?  I'd be a high school art teacher or an interior designer.
If 13 year old Kaili walked up to you on the street and asked you for some life advice, but you only had 10 seconds to answer her, what would you say?
Don't worry about what other people think of you, be authentically you and have confidence in yourself and your abilities!
If you were food, what would you be?
Bacon and mushroom carbonara- warm, cheesy creamy and tasty!
Would you rather your shirts be always two sizes too big or one size too small? Definitely two sizes too big.
Where can we find out more about Kaili Saba?
My IG account is where it's at! www.instagram.com/kailisaba, or my website www.kailisaba.com for my portfolio and online shop.
